James Hollace Bowman, 102, of Rocky Mount, Va. passed away at his home on June 14, 2012. Hollace was born March 10, 1910, to the late Dorus Isaac and Rosa Allie Bowman and was a lifelong resident of Franklin County. He was also preceded in death by a brother Ralph Isaac Bowman; his wife of 55 years, Myra Laprade Bowman; his second wife of 11 years, Helen Main Bowman; son Russell Eugene Bowman and great granddaughter Emily Dale Bowman. Hollace graduated from Daleville Academy in 1926. He wired his first house in 1937; eventually started Bowman’s Electric Heating and Plumbing Service; and was a mentor to many who worked with him during his career. He was a lifelong member of the Antioch Church of the Brethren where he served as a Deacon and in various other capacities during the years. Hollace was also a Charter member of the Callaway Ruritan Club which formed in 1941. During the 1980’s and 1990’s he worked on as many as 29 different Disaster Response trips for the Church of the Brethren Disaster Ministries program; he also did volunteer work on other church related building projects in the Virlina District. Until the last several years Hollace crafted a special item for the annual World Hunger Auction. He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, woodworking, fishing and helping others. He will be greatly missed by his surviving family: brother, J. Kenneth Bowman and his wife Eva; sons, James Bowman and his wife Judy, Hubert Bowman and his wife Judy, daughters, Elizabeth Oakes and her husband Julian and Ruth Santopolo and her husband John, daughter-in-law Peggy Hall Bowman; stepchildren, Virginia Esson, Joe Quesenberry and his wife Lois, Bonnie Royal and Peter Neumann and his wife Ursula; grandchildren, Sabrina (Don) Bliss, Allen Bowman, Robert (Kena) Bowman, Neal Bowman and fiancee Holly, Edward (Missy) Oakes, Rosemary (Steve) Schroyer, Tim (Monica) Bowman, Leslie (Rob) Minnix; step grandchildren, Mike and Phil Royal, Dana O’Farrell, Jon and Paul Quesenberry, Diana Checkeye, Grace Rockford and Karl Neumann; fifteen great grandchildren; twelve step great grandchildren; special nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, friends and neighbors. The family is especially grateful to the ladies who have cared for Daddy since March 2010 - Stephanie, Toni, Faye, Michelle, Morgan and Ashley. Your care and compassion will always be remembered. Also a special thanks to all medical personnel that have attended to the health needs of our father during the last several years; especially Dr. Jack Bumgardner and the staff at Carilion Clinic; the staff at the Medicine Shoppe in Boones Mill and Franklin Respiratory in Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2012, 11 a.m. at Antioch Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Eric Anspaugh officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
