Albert McCarty "Carty" Seagle, Jr.

Albert McCarty (“Carty”) Seagle Jr., 75, of Southwest Virginia, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Lewis Gale Hospital, following a sudden medical emergency. He was born in Rock Hill, SC, to the late Albert M. and Pauline (Giles) Seagle. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Andrea ("Andy") Shamblin.

Carty spent his early childhood in Rock Hill, SC, before moving to Bristol, VA in 1956 and Lynchburg, VA in 1962. Beginning in 1963, he delivered newspapers for the Lynchburg Daily Advance. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1969. Following graduation, he enrolled at The College of William and Mary, and spent many years in Williamsburg, VA, working in the hospitality and funeral industries. He returned to Lynchburg in 1978, completing his bachelor's degree at Lynchburg College in 1983 while working for the U.S. Post Office. He spent many years in Blue Ridge, VA, first working for the U.S. Post Office and then opening a State Farm agency in 1986. Soon after, he found his way to Roanoke, VA, where he built a family of his own. He spent the last two decades of his life working as an independent contractor, providing courier services throughout Southwest Virginia.

His nickname shares roots with the Irish name Cárthach, meaning “loving.” True to its meaning, Carty had a deep love for his family, both those living and those who came before him. An avid explorer of Southwest Virginia and beyond, he never met a state park he didn’t like or a car dealership lot that he didn’t want to browse. He will be remembered for his unique personality, humor, and willingness to help anyone in need, often turning strangers into friends. Through tissue donation, Carty's legacy of helping others continues.

Carty is survived by his beloved daughter, Amelia Cross, son-in-law Colin, and his cherished granddaughter, Poppy. He is also survived by two brothers, Sam Seagle and his partner, Nadine Smith, of Westminster, MA, and Brent Seagle of Gainesville, FL; one sister, Mary Nelson of Roanoke, VA; former wife, Audra Whitlow, her children, and their families; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a lifetime of friends, new and old.

A private memorial service and inurnment will be held in the fall at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boones Mill, VA. An Eastern Redbud tree will be planted in his memory, symbolic of his favorite time of year—the onset of spring. Beside him will rest Chunk, his granddog and best buddy from 2011 to 2023. The family appreciates the kindness, prayers, and support of all who have reached out to share in remembering Carty's life. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider registering as an organ and tissue donor in Carty’s memory.
