Alton Burnette Lavelle, age 90 of Hardy died Monday, April 21, 2008 at his home after a lengthy illness. Alton was an active member of Red Valley United Methodist Church, a veteran paratrooper of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elsie Jamison Lavelle; daughter and son-in-law, Gay and Ed Lassiter; son, David A. Lavelle; three grandchildren, Kristal Lassiter and Scott Nelson, Austin, Texas, Brady and Ingrid Lassiter, Richmond, David Lassiter, Atlanta, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Owen Lassiter and Noah Nelson; brother, Gene Lavelle; sister, Fawnie Roadruck; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted from Red Valley United Methodist Church, 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008 with Rev. Patricia Stover officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Red Valley United Methodist Church Bus Fund, 30 Red Valley Road, Boones Mill, Virginia 24065. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
