Annise Grant Preston, 83, of Rocky Mount, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2014. She was the youngest and last surviving child of Mary Cassell Grant and Henry Grant. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Hampton Preston (Hamp); brothers and sister-in-law, Clifford Grant, J. T. and Anne Grant; half-brother and half-sister, Forrest (Mary) Grant and Sadie (Ted) Swain. Annise loved everyone and never met a stranger. She was kind to all and spent her entire life nurturing and caring for others. She enriched the lives of so many people. She was a teacher's assistant in the Franklin County School System and was loved by her students at Burnt Chimney and Lee M. Waid schools. After her retirement she continued to volunteer and especially enjoyed reading to the little children. She was a member of Redwood United Methodist Church and was active in their ministries. Annise was an outstanding cook and known for her red velvet and fresh coconut cakes and pecan pies. Annise is survived by her children and spouses, Cindy and Barry Smith, Johnny and Jolee Preston, Jackie and Steve Brubaker; eight grandchildren, Heather and TJ Shepardson, Jamie and Saxton Moss, Joey Preston, Sarah Preston, Ashley and Josh Grice, Riley Brubaker, Tyler Brubaker, Mackenzie and Josh Harris; five great-grandchildren, Caroline, Layla and Kate Moss, Carter and Lena Shepardson; nieces, Susan (Artie) Schricker and Donna (Eric) Schaffer; and many loving friends. Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, December 6 with the Reverend Bradley S. Dulaney and Aubrey Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 5. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by Sarah Preston, Erma Lou Young, Emma Tapia and the staff at South Roanoke Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Redwood United Methodist Church Memorial fund, 3001 Old Franklin Turnpike, Rocky Mount, VA. 24151.
