“Doc” Van Name, age 95 of Boones Mill and formerly of Urbanna passed away Friday, March 16, 2007 at his home.

He was born April 13, 1911 in Gloucester County, Virginia a son of the late Arthur LaGrange, Sr. and Ethel C. Van Name. “Doc” will long be remembered for his 50 year career as a Family Physician in Urbanna, 30 years as a Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Medical Society of Virginia, Board of Visitors Medical College of Virginia, Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, Urbanna Town Council for 12 years. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Urbanna where he served on the Board of Administration, Trustee and Sunday School Teacher. He committed a lot of time to the Boy Scouts of America. He was raised a Master Mason in Arlington Lodge #102 Millers Tavern, Virginia, 1943. He was affiliated with Urbanna Lodge #83 1945, Worshipful Master 1948, District Deputy Grand Master 1954, Grand Purveyor of Grand Lodge of Virginia, Board of Governors, Masonic Home of Virginia for 9 years. Exalted a Royal Arch Mason, Urbanna Chapter #59 1945. Served as High Priest 1955-56 and 1981-82, Charter member Penn Neck Commandry #33. He moved to Boones Mill in 1991 and lived with his son and family. While there he became a member of the Cave Spring Masonic Lodge #230, The Royal Arch chapter #22, and present member of Isaac Masonic Lodge #29. He was a past member of of Big Lick Kiwanis Club, Boones Mill Lions Club, taught Sunday School at Red Hill Church of the Brethren and currently was attending Boones Mill United Methodist Church. Doc tutored many Masons throughout Virginia. He brought joy to many through his pen and ink etchings of sailing vessels and historic landmarks.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace C. Van Name.

Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, William H., Sr. and Susan N. Van Name; his grandson, William H., Jr. and wife Hillary L. Van Name; special friend, Madeleine Nixon; nephews, nieces and many dear friends and Masonic brothers.

The family expresses special gratitude to caregivers, Edie, Mary Frances and Ruby.

Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 7:00 p.m. Sunday with Rev. A. Benjamin Chidester officiating and Masonic rites by Isaac’s Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M.

Doc’s family has requested that memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Services in Saluda, Virginia will be conducted from Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2007 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Middlesex Memorial Cemetery, Inc. in Urbanna.
