Augustus “Dale” Brown, 78, of Wirtz, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2008.
Son of the late Troy and Sally Fannie Brown, he is preceded in death by brothers Wilford, Ralph, Wallace, Fulton, Wayne, and Calvin Brown.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 52 years, Shirley Anderson Brown. Surviving children include son, Monty (Teresa) Brown, Wirtz, and daughters, Rhonda (Tim) Gray, Raleigh, NC, Brenda (Jim) Chewning, Roanoke, Melinda (Roger) Prillaman, Wirtz, Marsha (Kevin) Jordan, Raleigh, NC, and Nila (David) Short, Fredericksburg. He was also blessed with 14 wonderful grandchildren: Travis and Matthew Brown; Joshua, Benjamin, and Lydia Gray; Claire Chewning; Annie, Zane, and Maggie Prillaman; Brooke and Bailey Jordan; Abigail, Caleb, and Anna Grace Short. He is also survived by one sister Maureen (Dillon) Ellis, Midlothian; sisters-in-law, Virginia Brown, Anne Brown and Christine Brown; In-laws, Rachel and Kenneth Allman, Yvonne Anderson, Gladys Anderson, Curtis Anderson and Silas Holland; several nieces and nephews and his faithful dog, Rosie.
Dale was a member of Mt. Ivy Christian Church and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served three terms on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors and retired from Rubatex after 29 years. He was a lifetime farmer and avid gardener on his boyhood farm.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008 with Reverend David Short, his son-in-law, and Reverend Steve Pasley officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Boones Mill.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
