Avery Nelson “Pedro” Cooper, age 87 of Rocky Mount died Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. He was born January 1, 1924 in Franklin County a son of the late Chafe and Iloe Cooper. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Thurman Cooper; and sister, Irene Ferguson. Surviving are his two brothers, Gerald (Vangie) Cooper, and Cash (Betty) Cooper; three sisters, Martha (Buddy) Brooks, Gaynell (W.D.) Messenger, and Kitty (Jim) Haynes. Pedro was a member of Furnace Creek Baptist Church and was active for many years until he was confined to the healthcare facilities. Most of Pedro’s world revolved around music. He was self taught and became an accomplished banjo and guitar player. He performed on a live radio show in the 1950’s for WMVA Martinsville. In the late 1970’s, he recorded two albums with the group, Pedro Cooper, Elva Phillips, and The Pumpkin Vines. Graveside services will be conducted from Furnace Creek Baptist Church Cemetery 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Mike Lawhorn and Pastor Joe Dillon officiating.
