Listen to Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Stout, age 72 of Rocky Mount VA went peacefully into the arms of our Lord God Sunday, February 11, 2018, surrounded by her friends and family at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Chalon Sur Marne, France, Barbara graduated from Roanoke College with a degree in teaching, and continued her education at Virginia Tech to a Master’s Degree with a reading certification. She spent the majority of her career teaching within the Franklin County School System. As a Chapter 1 resource Teacher along with Third grade; teaching in Sontag, Snow Creek, Callaway, and finally retiring from Dudley school. Barbara is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert Stout; as well as her son, Rob Stout; and her mother, Marie Victoire Jacquinet Brunson. She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Brunson; and brother, Patrick Brunson. Barbara’s extended surviving family includes three sisters-in-law, June Ward, Melody Long, and Mary Stupp; nieces and nephews, Heather Steele, Kelly Davis, Lindsey Hudson, Anthony Long, Alison Stupp, Nathan Long; and six step-grandchildren. Barbara had many hobbies such as sewing, quilting, painting, and wire weaving. She was a Master Gardener and a member of the Bald Knob Artists group. There were so many hobbies that she often abandoned one thing for another in her excitement to work on the next. Housework was low on her priorities because she enjoyed her time outside during the summer and spending it on the things and people she loved. She loved her fur babies, and enjoyed spending time with them. She enjoyed the simple things in life such as sunshine, roses, a good cup of tea, and watching the hummingbirds, which she planned for and fed every year. Barbara was an extremely kind and giving person, often to the point of doing without to help others. She brightened so many lives, and the world is a lesser place without her. Despite being a lady of small stature, she was strong and courageous –more than enough so for everyone around her. We have been truly blessed to have her with us. We feel that Heaven has received back one of its brightest shooting stars. A private graveside burial service will take place at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday February 13 th , 2018 at Mountain View Memorial Park on Grassy Hill Road. A memorial to celebrate Barbara’s life is being planned for the spring of 2018. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation in Barbara’s honor to any charity of your choice. Some of Barbara’s favorite charities were the Bradley Free Clinic, Roanoke, Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue, and Heavenly Manna, Rocky Mount. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
