Barbara Rae Woodford Amos, born March 27, 1938, was embraced in Jesus’ loving arms on Friday, February 3, 2017. It is a testament to her love of family that she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, their spouses, and family friends as she joined Thomas Giles Amos, her loving husband of 57 years at their heavenly home. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Helen Woodford and her sister-in-law Mary Brown and brother-in-law Walter (Dood) Brown. Surviving are her brothers, Henry (Lucille) Woodford of Huddleston, VA and Lynwood (Betty Jo) Woodford of Bluefield, WV and in-laws Barbara and Richard Cannaday, Gail and Bill Melton, Lottie Clarke, and numerous nieces and nephews. Barbara did a tremendous job rearing seven children who remain to carry on her memory and benevolence. These are Bobby (Patty), Donnie (Genie), Ronnie (Wanda), Jerry, Denise Metts (Steve), Jimmy (Ashley), and Dana Shelburne (John “Skip”). She will always be known as “Granny” by her grand-children with whom she shared many treasured moments. These are Joey (Shayna), Chris (Nicole), Nathan, Michael, Zachary, Jonathan, Jeremy (Amanda), Joshua, Benjamin Metts, Corey Metts, Jackson, Lucas, Kirstin Shelburne, and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Shelburne. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Taylor Metts, Izek (and soon to be born baby brother), Jo Lynn, and Nora. Barbara is also survived by two very special family friends, Jay and Becky Saunders. Barbara was raised on a beef and dairy farm in Huddleston, VA. When she was 16 years old, she married Thomas, the love of her life. She and Thomas joined his family on their tobacco and dairy farm in Scruggs. They carried on the Amos family legacy, raising 5 boys and 2 girls. Barbara was up before the sun every morning, fixing homemade biscuits to ensure her considerable family was well-fed before they headed to work in the fields. She was an excellent cook, even working for a time at Chestnut Creek Country Club. Barbara enjoyed spending time on Smith Mountain Lake and looked forward to planting her flower beds every spring. She loved quilting with her friends and attended Mount Ivy Christian Church. She loved crafting and painting and was a talented seamstress, quilter, and crochetier. She was always excited to share her talents with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, having them over for sleepovers and teaching them to paint and crochet. They were her greatest treasures. Favorite family gatherings were always held in Barbara’s home. She handled this large family with ease and grace and will be lovingly missed by all. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Monday with Steve Pasley, Minister officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
