Dr. Benjamin Peyton Divers, Jr. passed peacefully from this world at his home Wednesday November 7, 2007. He was born to the late Benjamin P. Divers, Sr. and Ethel Byrd Divers September 13, 1929 in Glade Hill, VA.

He graduated from Lynchburg College and obtained his Doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Georgia in 1970. He served his country in Korea, and came home to Franklin County where he wed Martha Ann Hudson in 1955 and began a teaching career that lasted forty years. First at Franklin County High School from 1957 until1964, then at Ferrum College from 1964 until his retirement in the mid-1990’s, serving many of those years as Chairman of the Math Department.

He took great satisfaction in his career and the knowledge that he had contributed so much to the education and betterment of so many young people. He had many loves and talents. He was an avid sports fan and an accomplished baseball player earning an invitation to play minor league baseball in the New York Yankees farm system after his college career was over. He took great pride in his gardening, his fruit trees, and his home place. He truly loved the land. He was an avid reader of current events, Civil War and World War II history. He served as a Sunday school teacher and Deacon in the Rocky Mount Baptist Church. He was above all a kind and decent man who dearly loved, appreciated and cared for his family.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty-two years Martha Ann Hudson Divers, two sons Bob Divers of Phoenix, AZ and Charlie Divers of Rocky Mount, VA, three granddaughters Jessica and Sarah Divers of Phoenix, AZ, Sierra Clark of St. Albans, WV. In-Laws Cecil Lynch, Mary Louise and Raymond Williams, Bob Naff and Frances and Lenford Dooley. Nieces and nephews Charles Lynch, Jesse and John Moore, Pat, David and Laura Williams, John Simms, Mary Adkins, David and Richard Dooley and Mary Lou Campbell. Also special friends Marie Preston, Allen and Doris Richards, and Jim Ayers. He also had a special love for his long-time friend, college roommate and Ferrum colleague Hank Norton.

Visitation will be at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount Friday Nov. 9 from 6-8 PM. Services will be at Rocky Mount Baptist Church Saturday Nov.10 at 2:00 PM with Dr. Jack Corvin officiating followed by interment at The Ayers Family Cemetery in Glade Hill.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rocky Mount Baptist Church, 85 West Church Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151 or the American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23235.
