Bernice Carter Johnson, age 79 of Ferrum, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 16, 2014. She was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, "Nana", "Grandnana", and friend, who will always be in our hearts. She was fierce in her love for family and friends and the first to volunteer to take a dish or run an errand for those in need. Her children knew they were loved totally and unconditionally and she passed that love infinitely to her eight grandchildren and great-grandson. For hours "Nana" would play Yahtzee, Skip-Bo, and "the car game" while sitting with her grandchildren on her front porch swing. She was full of life, intelligent, independent, and loved spending time with family and friends bowling, playing cards, camping, or just visiting with them. This amazing woman is survived by her daughters, Diane Shively of Ferrum, Denise (Chris) Rahmes of Christiansburg; and son, Chuck (Monica) Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC. She is also survived by her devoted grandchildren, Scott Shively, Katie Shively, Adam Shively, Paige Rahmes, Rachel Rahmes, Neal Rahmes, Madeleine Johnson, Garrett Johnson; and great-grandson, Aidan Cook. Bernice, as was her selfless nature, wanted to leave us as she lived her life "without a fuss". There will not be a visitation or service to attend. The family respectfully asks in lieu of food or flowers to honor her memory with a donation in her name to Good Samaritan Hospice at 2408 Electric Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24018. Her request for everyone was to live and enjoy life and just remember her fondly. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
