Bessie Young Hodges

Bessie Young Hodges, age 81 of Ferrum passed away Friday, December 24, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born June 11, 1929 a daughter of the late John and Hallie Young. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lavy Leonard Hodges; sons, Lawrence and William Hodges; daughter, Doris Prillaman; grandson, Toby Gearhart; brothers, Elwood, Ivan and Roy Young; and sister, Clarice Young. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Wayne Hodges of Ferrum; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Odell Midkiff of Ferrum, Ruby and Ivan Nester of Ferrum, Carol and Warren Fain of Woolwine; Shirley and Tony Belcher of Ferrum; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two nephews. Bessie retired from Bassett Walker in 1994 and was an avid gardener, great cook, and devoted mother. She was blessed to have a loving family who opened their home and cared for her in her final years. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Winston Critchlow officiating. Interment will follow in the Hodges Family Cemetery, Ferrum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Carilion Hospice of Franklin County, 390 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151. The family would like to express a special thank you to Morgan Isaacs and Teresa Eggleston for the kindness and compassion that was extended to their mother. Her family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount and other times at the home of Tony and Shirley Belcher, 1544 King Richard Road, Ferrum.
