Betty Jane Corvin, age 75 of Ferrum died Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Betty was born in Banner Elk, North Carolina on August 4, 1936 to James and Ethel Stout. She spent her childhood in their small home on Buck Mountain near Elk Park, Tennessee. Her father died when she was 13 years old and she was reared, along with two sisters, Mildred and Leone, by her widowed mother. She attended a one room elementary school, taught by her grandfather, then moved to Cloudland High School where she graduated as salutatorian. She attended Milligan College until she got a job in Bristol Tennessee. There she met and married Jack and had their only child.
She moved with her family to Kansas City, Missouri and worked in the Dean’s office of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary while Jack attended the seminary. While there, she completed her Bachelor’s degree at William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri.
They moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she worked in a Realtor’s office and C & S Bank. Through her diligence and faithful support she earned her Ph T (Put hubby Through) degree. In 1968 her family moved to Ferrum, Virginia and Betty was soon offered a job teaching in the Ferrum Elementary School. She taught second grade there for 14 years until she was asked to be a Coordinator of the gifted program, which she did until her retirement.
She was an equal partner with her husband in pursuit of their dream of serving God through a teaching ministry. She was a woman of uncompromising faith, by which she lived and by which she died. She lived intrinsic values in which “things” had less importance than people and relationships. She loved and cared for birds and was excited when we could attract new varieties to the feeders.
Betty was venturesome and loved to travel to other places and cultures. She never stopped learning and assisting others to do the same. Through her teaching Sunday School Class at Rocky Mount Baptist Church and her own diligent study, she became a true scholar of the Bible. She was a very tender hearted woman who could feel the pain of others. She was a giver.
Her family is thankful for the outpouring love and support she received during her final days and hours from family, friends, hospital and hospice care. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Odell. Surviving her husband Jack W. Corvin, Sr; son and daughter-in-law, Jack W. Corvin, Jr. and Cindy of Boones Mill; sister and brother-in-law, Leone and Curtis Lush of Joplin, Missouri; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
