Betty Evon Akers Simmons, 77, of Hardy, VA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 11, 2014. Betty was born and raised in the countryside of Dublin, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Charlie Simmons; her parents, Harvey & Lillian Akers; her brothers, Frank, Leroy, Tom and David Akers; her sisters, Ellen Reed, Alma Huff, Catherine Sipple, May Stephenson and Mary Akers and a cherished great-grandson, Gabriel Cash Webster. She is survived by her children, Rachel Arnett of Wirtz, Andrew & Shirley Simmons of Boones Mill, Gail & Ricky Foster of Hardy, Janice & Lennie Atwood of Roanoke, Kenny & Theresa Simmons of Hardy, Charles & Sherry Simmons of Wirtz, Calvin & Annette Simmons of Hardy, Gene & Jenny Simmons of Roanoke, Donna & Glen Hugus of Covington and Julie Kirk of Wirtz; 35 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, Wilford & Mary Simmons of Hardy, brother-in-law, Audrey Reed of Christiansburg, sister-in-law, Louise Akers of Christiansburg and a host of special nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty loved being surrounded by her family. She always cherished her bouquets of flowers and giggled over her "secret" deliveries of soda pops and sweets from those who knew her best. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Oak Hill Old German Baptist Church, 101 Elam Road, in Boones Mill, VA with Elder Robert Montgomery officiating.
