Listen to Obituary

Brian, a native Washingtonian was born May 2nd 1949 to the parents of Maryelee and William Robert Stearman. He had a truly great life that was unfortunately cut short by a courageous battle against esophageal cancer on August 23, 2023. Although he had a great life, there were a few regrets along the way. He would have loved to have become a major league baseball player, gotten at least 1 hole in one in golf, had more successful local sports teams to support and not being able to be with the love of his life (his wife Kathy) for eternity.

Brian recognized the importance of education as both a differentiator and success factor. He obtained a BS in Management from the University of South Carolina, an MBA from Louisiana State University, as well as Executive Training at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Center and at the Aspen Institute in Colorado. He also leveraged his business success to provide hundreds of graduate level scholarships for young engineers around the world through the International Road Federation.

Based on part time consulting jobs during graduate school, Brian decided that management consulting was his calling. His first consulting job was with Roy Jorgensen Associates that specialized in transportation …that became Brian’s area of expertise for the next 40 years. Based on the quality of his work, he was elevated to Vice President and sat on his first Board by the time he was 30. For the following 35 years, Brian provided services in 35 different countries and all 50 states and established himself as a leader in the transportation field. Although he contributed to the success of billions of dollars of infrastructure projects, there were no roads or bridges named after him. He did however have 7 of his projects win prestigious Global Achievement Awards (Best World Practice) and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Road Federation.

In addition to Roy Jorgensen Associates, Brian also became a Partner at Booz Allen & Hamilton and a Vice President and subsidiary President of the Parsons Corporation. In total, Brian served on 11 Boards of Directors…6 as Chairman. Finally, in 2014, Brian retired and refocused his life on lake living, playing golf and running a golf league, gourmet/BBQ cooking, rooting for LSU (Geaux Tigers), being a grandpa, and just enjoying life with his beautiful wife, Kathy.

Brian leaves behind 4 adult children (Jennifer, Bill, Bryan and Aubree), 3 grandchildren (Natalie, Drew and Logan), and the best wife a man could ever expect to have (Kathy). Although his family will miss him, they all know that there will always be “love from above” coming their way.

The family will have a Celebration of Life event at the Waterfront Country Club in Moneta, Virginia from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, August 26th. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the International Road Educational Foundation at https://www.irf.global/funding/

Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount – Smith Mountain Lake.
