Broaddus Moyer Shively, 78, died Monday, April 21, 2008. Born on August 11, 1929 in Roanoke, VA, he grew up in Ferrum and was a long-time resident of Rocky Mount. Broaddus was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Imre Jo Broome Shively; his son, Thomas Moyer Shively; his parents, Elmer Moyer and Nelle Easter Shively; his brother, Paul Johnson Shively; and his nephew, Paul Mark Shively. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Landon and Victoria Demaree Shively, and his grandson, Robert Landon Shively of Rochester Hills, MI; his sister-in-law, Barbara Lee Broome Hardy Hamner of Quinton; his nieces, Elizabeth Ann Shively Rutherfoord, and husband William Hamilton Rutherfoord, of Roanoke, Denise Rebecca Hardy, Lee Imre Hardy, and Barbara Neal Hardy Meyer, and husband Frank Lovell Meyer, of Danville; and special family friends Timothy Gibson, Gianpiero Repole and Fred and Valeria. The family is most appreciative of the special care given by Megan Hunt and Renay Guilliams. A 1946 graduate of Ferrum High School, Broaddus began studies at Virginia Tech before enlisting in the United States Air Force. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Broaddus served from 1948-1952, receiving an honorable discharge at the rank of Technical Sergeant. He returned to Virginia Tech and graduated with a business degree in 1956. After working for several different companies, Broaddus joined Central Oil of Virginia Corporation, starting as a bookkeeper in 1963 and working his way up to President, a position he held from 1988 until his retirement in 1992. Always civic minded, Broaddus served the Town of Rocky Mount in various capacities throughout his life. In addition to serving as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals from 1975-1990 and the Town Council from 2000-2001, he was a two-term mayor from 1990-1998. Projects completed under his leadership as mayor include the designation of Rocky Mount as a Virginia Main Street Community, the creation of the Community Partnership for Revitalization, the renovation of the Norfolk Southern Railroad Depot as the Community and Hospitality Center, the construction of the Farmers’ Market and Citizens’ Square, the designation of the central business district as a National and State Historic District, the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant, and the acquisition of land to be developed as the Rocky Mount Office and Technology Park. In addition to participation in local government, he was involved in community organizations such as the American Legion, the Lions Club, the Franklin County Rescue Squad Board and the BB & T Franklin County Advisory Board. He was a long-time member and elder of Rocky Mount Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Funeral services will be conducted from Rocky Mount Christian Church on Tuesday, April 29, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jody A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 28, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
