Charles Kenneth Akers

Charles Kenneth Akers, age 88 of Rocky Mount died Friday, May 12, 2023. He was born December 9, 1934 a son of the late Charles Weldon and Mildred Fralin Akers. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Helen Austin Custer Akers and brother Lowell Jamison Akers. Surviving are daughter Elizabeth Nichols (Russ Fitzgerald); son Greg Akers (Mary); sisters Janice Foster (Marvin) and Sylvia Wray; brothers Jack Akers and Al (Marie) Akers; grandchildren Travis Nichols (Antonia), Carmen Josephsen (Eric), and Kyle Akers; great-grandchildren Noah, Nyomi, Nevin and Noland Nichols; Eric III, Rudy, Elaine and Millie Josephsen; and Ethan Akers; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family. Ken made a profession of faith and became a member of Boones Mill Baptist Church in the 70’s. He moved his church membership to Gogginsville Methodist in 1984. He enjoyed family, automobiles, motorcycles, and working outdoors. He served 6 years in the US Army at Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Campbell, KY, Nellingen, Germany, and the Army Reserve, Salem, VA and the inactive Army Reserve. Ken married Helen in 1958 and they made their home in Roanoke. He was plant manager for Roanoke Box, Inc. most of his work career. He was employed by the State of Virginia briefly before retiring and returning to Rocky Mount in 1991. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Gogginsville Methodist Church in Kenneth's memory. Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023 with Rev. Kathryn Budzik officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
