Charles G. Menefee, Sr.

On Friday, March 1, 2019, Charles G. Menefee, Sr. died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 97. Charles was born on May 24, 1921 in Rocky Mount, Va. He was the son of the late Lee Moton Menefee, Sr. and Helen Garrett Menefee. He was a graduate of Ferrum College and attended the former Richmond Polytechnic Institute (now VCU). Charles was a WWII veteran serving in the Pacific Arena in the Army Air Corps. On September 16, 1950, he married Mary Alice Hudson, also of Rocky Mount. In 1982 Charles retired from the Coca Cola Company after a long career as a Quality Control Engineer. After retiring he gave back generously to a scholarship fund at Ferrum College for which he was awarded the Benjamin M. Beckham Medallion for exemplifying their motto of "Not Self, But Others". He also spent many years volunteering at the Virginia Eye Institute. Charles is preceded in death by his older brother Lee Moton Menefee, Jr. of Chesapeake, Va. and his younger brother Richard Reid Menefee of Sun City Center, Fl. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Alice Menefee of Richmond, his son Charles G. Menefee, Jr. (Susan) of Richmond, his daughter Lynn Dzyak (Phil) of Springfield, Va. and his daughter Mary Susan Menefee of Richmond; four grandchildren, Anne and Bill Menefee, Mary Catherine Dzyak Pfiester (Eric) and Laura Dzyak as well as two great granddaughters, Kaylee and Avrie Pfiester. The funeral for Charles will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 2 pm at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151 with burial to follow at the High Street Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following organizations.
