Charles Louis Ross, Jr, 89, of Rocky Mount, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 12, 2014 at the James River Nursing and Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va., following an extended illness.
He was born in Ferrum, Va. to the late Charles Louis, Sr and Katherine L. Smith on February 17, 1925. Charles graduated from Ferrum Training School in 1943, was drafted into the army and proudly served his country as an X-Ray technician with the 80th Field Hospital Unit in the European Campaign during WWII from 1943-1946. He attended Virginia Tech and University of Virginia. He married Barbara Anne Richards of the Pleasant Hill community.
A dedicated and loving father and husband, Charles also made many friends throughout the community as a sewing machine sales and service technician and a tinker, trader, big band, zydeco and traditional mountain music fan, especially old time fiddling. One of his greatest joys came through the fellowship with his church, Central Grace Church of Rocky Mount and his beloved family there.
Charles is survived by his wife, Barbara Richards Ross; sister, Mary Frances Goudie of Bassett, Va.; two children: Robert R. Ross, of Hampton, Va. and Lou Anne Ross-Purnell, of Flowery Branch, Ga.; two grandchildren: Betsy R. (David) Payne, of Santa Rita, Guam and Zachery A. Purnell of Atlanta, Ga. ; sister-in-law, Catherine (William) Kingery and brother-in-law, John W. Richards of Rocky Mount; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Central Grace Church in Thanksgiving to God for the life of Charles Ross.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Flora Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Central Grace Church on Sunday November 16 at 2 p.m. , interment will follow the service at St. James Methodist Church in Ferrum, Va. The family will receive friends at the home of Catherine and William Kingery.
