Charles A. VanLear, Jr. age 87 of Rocky Mount and formerly of Martinsville, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Franklin Health and Rehab Center after suffering a stroke on November 3, 2007.

He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and retired as a linotype operator in the composing room at the Martinsville Bulletin. Charles was a very active and faithful member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed yard work, sporting events and socializing with his countless friends, neighbors and members of his Sunday School Class even until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. and Clara VanLear; a brother, Robert M. VanLear and his wife of 58 years, Eva Johnson VanLear.

Surviving are his son, Charles A. VanLear, III and wife Sallie Ann of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Mrs. (Noel) Jean Spencer of Endicott, Mrs. Louise Johnson, Mrs. Susie Johnson both of Ferrum, Mrs. Delma Johnson of Martinsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles will be fondly remembered for his many kindnesses to others and his keen sense of humor. Charlie and Sallie Ann would like to extend their sincere gratitude to those who have loved and cared for him and brought him such joy over the years.

Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. J. Larry Holland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 110 Hilltop Drive, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” II Timothy 4:7-8.
