Listen to Obituary

Charlie Lee Adkins, age 88 of Ferrum, Virginia passed away November 2nd, 2025. Many family and friends knew Charlie by his nickname Cotton. Cotton was born and raised in the Mountains and Hollers of Endicott. He may have said that he would like to get out of that Holler, but he’d say he could never convince Rachel to leave. Charlie was preceded in death by his, mother and father, Robert and Myrtha Adkins; brothers, JD, Clarence, Kermit, and CL Adkins; sisters, Dorothy Young and Dorothy’s infant twin sister, Doris. Surviving to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 60 years, Rachel Nolen Adkins. Rachel dedicated her life to Charlie over the last several years, especially during his failing health. She rarely left his side and if she did get away for a few minutes, it wouldn’t be long before he would be hollering “Where’s Rachel”. She was an excellent wife and caregiver who demonstrated exceptional patience, kindness, love, and an unwavering commitment to her husband. Cotton also leaves behind two daughters, Lisa Dillon and husband Robert, Gail Arrington and husband Alton (Spanky) Arrington; grandsons, Jason Dillon and wife Kayla, Travis Dillon and wife Crystal, Andrew Arrington wife Julie; granddaughters, Elizabeth Hunley and husband Cameron, Hannah Booth and husband Ryan; great-grandchildren, Emily and Jase Dillon, Amelia Dillon and Coming in February Baby Boy Dillon, William, Alex and Austin Arrington, Kasey and Kane Booth and coming VERY soon Baby Boy Hunley. Charlie is also survived by one sister, Madeline Midkiff Jones whom he loved very much. He was very protective and caring for her over the years and in his last years she in turn became very caring and protective of him. Madline has been so dedicated to being a loving sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and true friend like no other. Charlie had numerous nieces and nephews that were very special to him. Cotton had many friends and neighbors that he thought highly of and loved them all. Many friends have been faithful to visit him over the last several years. His family appreciates all they have done. Special thanks to his close friend Stan Treaster and his wife Dawn who have helped him tremendously over the last several years. He leaves behind some very spoiled pets, Luke, Levi, and Leroy. Cotton could be rowdy at times and has been known to give his daughters and sons-in-law a few choice words from time to time. If you knew you knew, but they also knew he loved them deeply. He worked extremely hard to provide for his family and was instrumental in providing his children with what they needed to be successful and well cared for throughout their life. His generosity did not stop with his daughters and grandchildren. He helped many family members, friends, and neighbors who had a need or were facing a hardship. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Endicott Assembly of God, P.O. Box 310, Ferrum, VA 24088 or Friends of Ferrum Park (Main Account), P.O. Box 44, Ferrum VA 24088. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2025 with Pastor Marla Moore officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ferrum, VA while awaiting the return of his Lord and Savior. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
