Christine May Chumley, 88, of 420 Orchard Avenue, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the residence after three months of declining health.
She was born May 2, 1920, in the Redwood community to Willis Pinkard Chumley and Nannie Parker Mattox Chumley. She was a member of Redwood Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents.
Surviving is her beloved sister Gertrude Chumley Hunt of the residence. Also surviving are her niece Gail Hunt Swanson, Gail’s husband Charles, and their three children: Drew (and wife Margaret), Lucinda (and husband Jason), and Anna.
A lifelong homemaker, Christine gave generously of herself to the family and the neighborhood. Christine and her sister Gertrude shared a time-tested bond of love and companionship. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Carillion Hospice for the quality care they provided during Christine’s failing health. A special thank you goes to Kathy Dudley Doss who always stood ready to help and provide encouragement.
The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and other times at the residence.
Funeral services will be held at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, VA, on Saturday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Charles A. Swanson officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park on 220 north.
