Kelly Smithers, age 73, of Rocky Mount, Virginia left this world to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 6, 2015. His departure came unexpectedly and he will be greatly missed.
He was a loving husband for fifty-three years to his beloved wife Gail. They were known to be inseparable throughout the local community. Not only were they husband and wife, they were best friends. They worked in collaboration sharing a love for animals, cattle farming, gardening and were owners/operators of local businesses, including 619 Minute Market, which they retired from in 2012 after 43 years.
He was a loving father to his daughter Ginger, whom he often called his Pearl. They enjoyed each other's company and loved to laugh and joke.
Kelly was a gifted communicator and legendary storyteller. He could deliver the punchline to a joke with perfect timing due to his continual practice of creating humor and joy in the lives of everyone in his proximity. Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, having cookouts at his cabin on Blackwater River, watching westerns, spending time with his favorite dog Lou and helping Gail cook, garden and preserve their vegetables.
Kelly is survived by wife Gail, daughter Ginger (Wayne Barton) and six sisters Artie Gusler (Tommy), Cheta Holsclaw, Helene Angle (Eddie), Faye Pasley, Teresa Smithers, Elaine Gilley (Joe) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws Jerry Dudley (Judy Shaw), Jeff Dudley (Carol). Special niece and nephew Crystal and Jarrett Dudley, who along with Gail and Ginger, were with him when he passed.
Kelly was predeceased by his parents Doogie and Ruby Smithers and brothers, Bob and Nile Smithers.
The Smithers' family would like to thank their family and friends who have helped during this very difficult time, with special thanks to David Jones and his family.
