Curtis Hughes Oakes, age 82 of Penhook died Sunday, September 12, 2010 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Matherly Oakes on June 20, 2009; parents, Carr and Lula Yeatts Oakes; brothers, Charlie, Henry, Gene, Kelly, Letcher and Leslie Oakes; sisters, Eva Parsons, Cordie Parsons, Lila Farthing, Gladys Reynolds. He was an active member of Forrest Hill Christian Church where he served as Deacon. Mr. Oakes also retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Ian Smith of Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Wayne and Pam Oakes of Pineville, LA; grandchildren, Shane Smith, Alisha Smith, Rainelle Tisher, Curtis Wayne Oakes, Jr.; four great-grandchildren; brother, Carlton (Bernice) Oakes; sister, Bernice Oakes; sisters-in-law, Mary, Evelyn, Ruby and Rena Oakes; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Forrest Hill Christian Church 11 a.m. Wednesday with Ted Clifton, Minister officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to Snow Creek Fire Department or Rescue Squad or Forrest Hill Christian Church. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Forrest Hill Christian Church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount – Smith Mountain Lake.
