David Carter Agee, 76, of Roanoke, Va. and formerly of Rocky Mount, Va., died Sunday, May 13, 2007.
Carter owned and operated Agee's Cabinet Shop from 1961 until 1990, when he turned the business over to his son, David Ronald Agee, who ran the business until his death in 2002.
Carter played bluegrass, gospel, and country music in two bands at the time of his death, Sounds of Bluegrass and The Guard Band. He played some as a teenager and resumed playing in the early 1960s. He played with many bands including Jim DeHart & Blue Ridge Ramblers, The Friday Night Band, and Roanoke Valley Pickers.
He was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a son of the late Tyler Turner and Mamie Ann Jones Agee. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Macy Mowyer, Carl K. and Tyler Francis Agee; and his beloved son, David Ronald Agee.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Ellen Bishop Agee; daughter, Mitzie Gayle Martin and husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Billy Joe Agee, Sherrie Nicole Pugh, Amanda Dawn Martin; daughter-in-law, Patricia Law Agee; stepsons, Raymond O'Neal Adkins and wife, Carrie Ann, Ricky Lynn Adkins and wife, Brenda; stepgranddaughter, Olivia Ann Adkins. Also surviving are numerous other family members, friends, and "adopted" children.
Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, with the Rev. Bradley S. Dulaney officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park with full military honors.
The family appreciates all of the efforts made by the doctors and nurses at the V.A. Medical Center, where they cared for Carter for 43 days on 4-J, ICU-3, ICU-2 and ICU-Stepdown before his death. Thanks also goes to the V.A. Oncology Department and the Blue Ridge Cancer Center for the loving care during Carter's cancer treatments.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Callaway Fire & Rescue or Bradley Free Clinic of Roanoke.
The family will receive friends Monday, May 14, 2007, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
