Donald Gene Brooks, age 84 of Redwood took his journey home on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur R. Brooks and Elsie Grace Snow Brooks; brother, Kenneth Dale Brooks, sisters, Charlotte Fay Dishon and Hazel Joyce Copko. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Ethel Jane Myers Brooks; daughter, Candace Jane Law (Doug), sons, Donald Gene Brooks, Jr., (Pat), and Tony Ray Brooks (Mary Lou); brothers, Wayne J. Brooks (Linda); 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. He was a U.S. Army Veteran from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He was with the 52nd Field Artillery, 3rd Armored Division, serving 15 months at Camp Younghans Japan. He was a long time member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, Rocky Mount where he was song leader and choir director for a number of years. He also enjoyed working with the youth department and started a youth choir. He will be greatly missed by many who knew and loved him. He came to Rocky Mount from Radford VA as Advertising Manager of the Franklin News Post in Rocky Mount. The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses in MICU and SICU along with Nurses in 3 West at Lewis Gale Hospital for the thoughtfulness and care given to our loved one, along with Carilion Clinic Hospice, Rocky Mount, VA. Funeral services will be conducted from Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 11:00 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Bobby Young officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount, VA.
