Donald "Donnie" Edward Akers

Donald "Donnie" Edward Akers, age 85 of Penhook, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Norma Jean Akers; parents, P.D. and Eliza Akers; and daughter, Rhonda Kaye Akers. Surviving are his sons, Donald “Eddie” Akers Jr. (Sharon) and Dillard Akers (Iris); granddaughter, Mackenzie Akers; grandson, William Akers; fiancé, Kathy Pickeral and her two sons, Stacey Pickeral (Jennifer) and Marty Pickeral, her grandchildren, Levi, Reed, and Wyatt Pickeral; sister, Peggy Akers Handy; and nephew, Ty Handy. Donnie served in the United States Marine Corps and was also a building contractor for 32 years. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, dancing, and bluegrass music. Donnie also delivered over one million copies of The Roanoke Times. Funeral services will be conducted at Henry Fork Church of the Brethren, 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022 with Pastor Ronald Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at the Bradner Family Cemetery. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
