Donald Wayne Turner

Donald Wayne Turner, 67, of Roanoke, Va. and formerly of Rocky Mount, Va. departed this life, Monday June 8, 2009, at the VA Medical Center. He was born June 21, 1941, to the late Jeff and Eva J. Turner. Donald was a member of First Baptist Church, where he made his commitment with his Heavenly Father and was prepared to enter His Kingdom. He was a graduate of Franklin County High School, where he was a member of the football team and the Beta society. He joined the US Air Force and following service to his country he was honorably discharged. Donald was employed with JP Stevens Silk Mill until the mill closed. and was then employed with AEP until his death. Donald was passionate about sports, and in the 60’s & 70’s, he announced “play by play” football with Glenn Lynch for the Franklin County Eagles on local radio. He coached little league football and was a member of the Rocky Mount Jaycees. His greatest joy was to watch his grandson, Devin, play sports. He would take him to his sports and stay on the sideline. He was “papa’s boy.” Surviving are his daughter, Sabrina Turner and friend Gwyn Burwell, two grandsons, Devin and Donavan, one sister and husband Iris & CW Toney, two nephews, Ricky and Eric Toney, one great nephew, Adam Toney, two great nieces, Amanda and Caitlyn Toney, two aunts, Marie Jones, Martinsville, and Elzie Jones, Rocky Mount, two close cousins, Doris T. Hall and the late Terry Hall and John Ed and Pat Turner. Also friends Patsy and Jim Elliott. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at the VA. Medical Center, ICU 2, and his AEP Family. The family requests memorial donations be made to “Future Generations Now”, First Baptist Church, PO Box 2799, Roanoke, Va. 24001. Memorial services will be conducted from Faith Chapel of First Baptist Church 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
