Doris Brooks Ferguson 84, of Rocky Mount went home to be with The Lord Jesus on February 9, 2012. She was born in Franklin County on March 7, 1927, the daughter of the late Elder Joseph A. Brooks and Jimmie David Brooks. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Elwood Eldridge Ferguson, six sisters Ruth Minter, Mary Brooks, Mattie Cundiff, Stella Brooks, Effie Holland, Sallie Kate Brooks Brown, ten brothers John Brooks, James Brooks, Morris Brooks, Fred Brooks, Albert Brooks, Paul Brooks, Glen Brooks, Roosevelt Brooks, Tillie Brooks, and Posey Brooks. She was a graduate of Glade Hill High School in 1945 and was also a graduate of Alice’s Beautician School of Martinsville in 1958. She was employed for a number of years at DuPont. She was involved with nutrition companies and loved helping people with enriching the quality of their lives. She was a dedicated Christian wife, mother, Sunday School teacher, and choir member who was last a member at Furnace Creek Baptist Church. She was a loving wife to her husband for over 63 years and was totally dedicated to being by his side in the hospital during the last years of his life. She had a kind heart for animals and anyone in need. She and Elwood enjoyed visiting elderly shut-ins, distributing food and cheer. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, flowers, roller skating, and water skiing. Surviving are her three children Brenda Ferguson Scott, Pamela Ferguson Jennings, and Timmie Elwood Ferguson; and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Elliott Scott and Lance K. Ferguson also her adopted son. Also surviving are her twin sister Dorothy Sink Riddle, and sister Cecil Brooks Brown. Any donations made in her honor may be directed to Furnace Creek Baptist Church, 975 Scuffling Hill Rd. Rocky Mount, VA 24151 or to a church based food pantry such as Heavenly Manna, PO Box 392, Rocky Mount, VA 24151. Funeral services will be conducted from Furnace Creek Baptist Church 3 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012 with Rev. Mike Lawhorn officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends 5-7 Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Furnace Creek Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount.
