Doris Brown Kirk, age 101 of Fork Mountain left her earthly life Sunday, March 5, 2017. She was born in Roanoke January 20, 1916 to the late Henry Guy and Annie Mattox Brown. Doris became a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Sydnorsville, in 1949 and was Sunday School Secretary and Treasurer for 32 years. During her membership with Woodmen of the World, she served as Treasurer over 25 years. As a volunteer with the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary beginning in 1982, Doris donned her pink smock for over 2500 hours. She was retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting Company with over 30 years of service. Also predeceasing Doris were her husband, Charles E. Kirk; daughter, Betty Lou Kirk Dillon; son-in-law, John M. Holcomb; brothers, Sherwood Brown and Lewis Brown; stepson, Everett J. Kirk; step-daughters, Bessie K. Matherly and Ruby K. Warren. Survivors include daughter, Nancy K. Holcomb; son-in-law, Jerry W. Dillon (Judy); granddaughters, Katherine Holcomb, Beth Hudson (Richard); great-granddaughter, Anna Hudson (Kyle Adams); step-grandchildren, Jimmy Warren (Christine, daughter Phyllis) and Peggy Garcia (David, daughters Meghan and Lauren); as well as several nieces and their families. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 3 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Chris Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Rita Doughton, 2085 Crooked Oak Road, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Fork Mountain Rest Home, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, and Flora Funeral Service for the care and compassion shown to our Mother and Grandmother during her life and at her passing. Doris contributed a portion of this obituary in her own writing, stating “This was written when I had all my marbles and they were in the right place.” Her family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 prior to the service on Wednesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
