Listen to Obituary

Doris Hattie Sumrell, age 74 of Rocky Mount went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 9, 2025. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose love and laughter will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her children, Eric Hall, Laurie Long and Suzanne Moss; grandchildren, Cori Moss, Justin Long, Sam Long, Shyann Overfelt and James Moss Jr.; and seven great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of her heart and endless love.

Doris loved the Lord above all else and cherished her family with every fiber of her being. She had the best “green thumb” around, growing beautiful gardens and sharing the fruits of her labor with anyone in need. She never let anyone “go without,” and her generosity knew no limits—without ever expecting a thing in return.

Known as the best cook ever, Doris would make a meal that warmed the stomach and healed the soul. She loved watching cooking shows on TV, tending to her plants, doting on her doggy "Bug" and most of all, laughing and joking with those she loved—often giving everyone a playful “hard time.”

Her kindness, humor, and unwavering faith leaves a legacy that will continue to grow, just like the gardens she tended so well. Services will be private. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
