Dorothy Walker, age 89, of Rocky Mount departed this earthly life for her heavenly home Saturday, September 24th to meet her Lord and Savior after a long illness. Waiting to welcome her was her husband, Cliff Walker. Preceding her in death were very special daughter-in-law Trish Walker; parents Charlie and Lucy Hodges; sisters Eunice Altis, Elizabeth Overstreet, Rachel Via, and Nadine King; brothers Charles Edgar Hodges, Clyde Hodges, William Hodges, and Johnnie Hodges. She is survived by three devoted children Mike Walker (Betty Southall), Rodney (Ann) Walker, and Lisa (Ronald “Rack”) James; four loving grandchildren whom she adored Josh Walker, Eric (Christy) Walker, Kristie (Jeremy) Adkins, and Olivia James; and four great-grandchildren who brought her much joy Rylan and Kylie Adkins, and Ella and Callan Walker. She is also survived by brothers and sisters Margie Freeman, Junior (Peggy) Hodges, Loretta Prillaman, Walter (Martha) Hodges, and Jackie Hodges and a host of nieces and nephews. Dorothy spent her life devoted to the four “F’s” – Faith, Family, Friends and Food. Family gatherings were always something she looked forward to, especially preparing Sunday lunch for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was well-known for her delicious Fresh Apple cakes and shared them with many. Gardening, canning, and freezing were favorite hobbies of hers for which she took great pride in. She also leaves a host of dear friends left to cherish her memory. She shared a close bond with several including but not limited to Norma Jean Jones, Frances Arrington, Carolyn Bailey, Mildred Swartz, Teresa Hodges, and Brenda Martin. Quite often she would say, “Friends are worth more than gold”, so she considered herself to be rich. The family would like to thank the staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Dr. Matthew Skelton and Jolee Preston, NP for the love and special care shown to mom during her illness. Dorothy was a dedicated member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for over 50 years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Woodlawn Baptist Church in her memory or The Trish Walker Memorial Scholarship fund c/o Evelyn Cundiff, 310 Key Lakewood Drive, Moneta, VA 24121.
