Dorothy Walker Jefferson, age 92, passed away January 24, 2017. She was born November 18, 1924, to the late Walter V. and Mary Lou Anderson Walker. She grew up in Pittsylvania County and graduated from the old Climax High School. She attended Madison College and National Business College, and later worked in the office of the Treasurer of Dan River Mills while her husband was serving in the United States Maritime Service during World War II. She married William Davis Jefferson in 1944. They were tobacco and dairy farmers, first in Pittsylvania County, then in Franklin County, where they operated a dairy for many years. They had been married for 61 years at the time of his death in 2006. She was a member of Glade Hill Baptist Church where she served as Clerk, Sunday School teacher, and pianist. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Jefferson Hamblett, and her brother, Harry Walker. She is survived by her son, Barry James Jefferson, his wife Donna, and their daughter, Carmen Krieger. She is also survived by her daughter, Sandra Jefferson Ruff, and her daughter, L. Temple Ruff and fiancé Christopher Cook, and her son, H. Alexander Ruff. She also leaves behind many special friends and neighbors. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Flora Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment of ashes will follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to Glade Hill Baptist Church or charity of your choice. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
