Dorothy Ellis Wuergler, age 86, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013. She was born May 12, 1927, to the late Thomas Ellis and Bessie Bobbitt Ellis. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Wuergler. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Brown and Gladys Powers and two brothers, Kyle and Junior Ellis. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Melvin and Faye Wuergler of Moneta, and daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Wes Astin of Rocky Mount, grandchildren, Leslie and Chino Novoa, Angela and Travis Beard, and Melissa and Luke Astin-Smith, 2 great grandchildren, Ethan Novoa and Chad Beard a sister, Lorraine Meador, a brother-in-law, Tilton Meador and several nieces and nephews.
She was a life-long member of Epworth United Methodist Church where she participated in many of the ministries of the church. She was a homemaker and babysitter for many neighborhood children and family members. Some of her favorite past times were working in her garden and quilting. One of the things "Grandma Dorothy" was best known for was her yearly homemade fruitcakes.
The family extends special appreciation to her caregiver Mrs. Helen Cooper and Good Samaritan Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 10, at 2:00 PM at Epworth United Methodist Church with The Reverends C. Wesley Astin, Jr. and Josh Munnikhuysen officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. While flowers are appreciated, memorial contributions may be made to Epworth UMC Building Fund, 60 Merriman Way Road, Moneta, VA 24121. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Saturday, November 9 at Flora Funeral Service, 665 S. Main St. Rocky Mount, VA.
