Douglas Lane "Boomerang" Wimmer, age 87 of Boones Mill, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2022. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Dennis and Rachael Wimmer, two brothers and 1 sister. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lynda Wimmer; four children, Ricky Wimmer, Kimberly (Craig) Alls, Steve (Marie) Wimmer, Tommy (Liana) Wimmer; one sister, Linda (Wayne) Clarkson; grandchildren, Lauren Alls, Jacob Wimmer, Haleigh Alls, Kayla Wimmer, Cora Wimmer, and Degan Wimmer; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was a carman/safety inspector for N&S Railroad for 39 years. Lane prided himself in putting three of his four kids through college. He was a self-taught musician and his favorite instrument was the banjo. Lane played in many bands, lead the music at bible study for years, sang and played for nursing homes. When his grandbabies would cry, he prided himself in getting them to sleep with his banjo. Lane was a 37-year member of Halesford Baptist Church. He loved playing horseshoes, cornhole, bowling, cards, and most sports. He also enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports and supporting their interests. He loved "Lane food" such as potted meat, sardines, vienna sausages, cabbage, and cornbread. Lane and Lynda loved watching sports, Wheel of Fortune, and The Price is Right. Every morning, they worked the Word Jumble in the Roanoke Times. He was known for his corny jokes. Lane left behind many things that only he could make run. He loved to work with his hands and invent things. Most of all, he just loved any time he could spend with family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at Halesford Baptist Church, 3:00 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2022. His family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
