Edith Janelle McGhee Sigmon departed this life January 18, 2013. She was born March 30, 1926 in Ferrum, Franklin County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter E. and Alma Sink McGhee of Ferrum, Franklin County, Virginia; and brothers, Horace, Curtis, Kyle, Lowell, Hampton and Frank McGhee; sisters, Lucille (Robert) Stowell, Lena (Dave) Ruff. Surviving are her husband Gail E. Sigmon; son, Walter Gail Sigmon; grandsons, Brock Sigmon and Seth Sigmon; sisters, Mary Maude (Benny) Rakes and Hester (Charles) DePue; 18 nieces and nephews. Special thank you to niece Gladys McPherson, caregiver Peggy A. Hale and friend, Beverly Merritt. Edith graduated from Ferrum College and was employed at Ferrum College as Manager of the Laundry Department and the Senior Citizens Center in Rocky Mount. She enjoyed genealogy research for more than 50 years and published a book” The Sigmon Family” and co-authored “Franklin County True Stories, Letters and Recipes from the Grapevine”. Edith was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, St. James Church, Ferrum College Alumni Association, Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, American Red Cross, Franklin County Genealogy Society, Franklin County Historical Society and the Red Hat Society, serving on numerous boards and committees. Edith loved her family and friends and she will be deeply missed by all. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mary White officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or please make a donation to your favorite charity. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to service on Sunday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
