Edward Joseph “Eddie Joe” Novak, Sr., age 80 of Hardy died Monday, January 29, 2024 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born January 8, 1944 a son of the late Charles and Rita Novak. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles and George. Eddie was a graduate of Bishop Malloy High School in Astoria, Queens. He became a member of the NYC Police Department on December 20, 1965. After serving in several precincts in NYC his long term wish to be a motorcycle officer in the Highway 1 Unit was fulfilled. There he escorted presidents, vice presidents, popes' and dignitaries throughout New York. Later on, he rode alongside the forerunners of the NYC Marathon. Eventually NYC became congested with truck traffic that carried hazardous waste and a new department was created which Eddie became lead training officer for. Ed's hazardous waste knowledge was legend among other police departments, and he often found himself training in different states along the Northeast. Eddie loved and excelled in teaching and was well known for his great personality. Whatever Eddie took on he did so with great enthusiasm. Eddie Joe as he was called by his peers was also known for his wicked sense of humor. Regarded as an officer and a gentleman, Eddie was truly loved and respected by all who worked alongside him. Eddie retired from the NYCPD on May 15, 1997 to try his hand at a brand-new position of stay-at-home dad. Eddie loved animals and often helped his wife Diane socialize rescued kittens in their home. Eddie is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Diane; his daughter, Lori Ann; and sons, Edward Jr. Michael Edward of Newburgh New York, and Grant Alexander of Hardy, He is also survived by grandchildren, Mickey Novak of Manassas and Patricia Diane, and Bobby Novak of Newburgh, New York; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
