Elisha Chapman Goggin, age 89, went home to the Lord on Thursday, October 18, 2007.

Chapman was a spirited, youthful man, who treasured his family and friends. He was a hard-working, yet fun-loving gentleman. Colorful and genuine, Chapman was loyal to the people who loved him, helpful to those who called upon him, and tender to children and those who needed him. His intelligence, honesty, and quiet, private generosity were shaped by life’s challenges, and he cared deeply about those who needed a hand-up.

For more than 45 years, he owned and operated a dairy farm in Penhook. He served on the board of Farm Credit for 17 years and was involved with the Callaway Ruritan Club, among other civic and social groups. In his 80s, Chapman moved with his bride to a new home in Boones Mill, traveled extensively, and became a Baptist, after more than 70 years as a Methodist.

During his lifetime, he was a long-time member of Penhook United Methodist Church and later attended Christ Community Church. Chapman was married for 54 years to his first wife, Delsie Scott Goggin, who predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Marie Jamison Goggin of Boones Mill, sister Elizabeth Craddock of Galax, and sister and brother-in-law Georgie and Edd Nunn of Bassett. He is also survived by many loving and special nieces and nephews, including Ruth and Sam Cook of Galax; Roger and Gina Shelor of Martinsville; Doug and Peggy Nunn, Jimmy Nunn, Richard and Nancy Ezelle, Charlie and Peggy Brown, all of Bassett, and many others. His extended family includes the Scott family, as well as his step-children Clark and Shirley Jamison, Linda F. Jamison, Fred and Linda Jamison, Lynn and Dee Jamison, and Lisa and Kevin Bowling. Chapman adored children and had a special bond with great-nephews Sam Chapman (Sonya) and Matthew (Andrea) Cook and David Shelor and grandchildren Satchel and Claire Bowling. He is also survived by his special friends Raymond and Evalene Preston.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday with his family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Home.

Reverend Leonard Castleman will conduct the funeral service on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fairmont Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park.

Remembrances of Chapman may be made to the Fairmont Baptist Church Building Fund at 1669 Bethlehem Road, Boones Mill, VA 24065.
