Listen to Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Powell Carter, born May 6th, 1931 to Henry L. and Mary F. Powell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of forty four years, Leon V. Carter, brothers and sisters Hazel Ogle, William "Bill" Powell, Doris Nutter, in-laws Larry Ogle, Evelyn Powell, Iris T. Powell, and Don Nutter. Her life in this world is best described in her own words, listing her occupations as "Domestic Engineer X 3 Caregiver X 2" and in summary, "The years from 1954 to 1978 are a figment of my imagination in which I considered myself to be on a foreign country?s soil. I never ?outgrew? Virginia and feel it is the only state that has any significance. In Maryland I was considered a southerner (tho we were south of the Mason Dixon line). Upon returning here in 1978 I found myself known as a ?damyankee? with a ?funny accent?. Because of a serious illness of the ?keeper? I?m married to, I?ve learned to take the bitter with the sweet, expect the unexpected and always stop to smell the roses.... I don?t know where to begin with the memories. Things I can?t change or improve upon are best stowed in a velvet-lined tool chest!" She is survived by her children Charlotte R. Carter and Carlton L. Carter, daughter-in-law, Wanda F. Carter and grandchildren Nichole Shively, Alanna O?Neill, and Thomas O?Neill, brothers and sisters Nancy Duffy of Windsor, N.C., Clifford Powell, Jim and Carmel Powell of Rocky Mount, Va., Barbara and George Dunkley of Brookneal, Va., and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Liz Lazenby officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Carter Family Cemetery, Ferrum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any animal rescue charity of one?s choice. Her family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m.
