On Tuesday, October 29th, Betty Thorne, 94 passed from this life and into another. Her trusted reward for her faith in Jesus Christ paved her way into an eternal Heaven. She was born February 12, 1919, in Richmond, Virginia. She later became the loving wife of Thomas Lee Thorne, Sr., April 12, 1942, where they shared their life and home in Washington, DC and in Maryland. In 1961, they moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, with their three sons: Richard L. Thorne, Thomas L. Thorne, Jr. and Carl L. Thorne. There they lived and worked and were all active members of First Baptist Church in Wilmington. She was a lifelong member of the Women's Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1974, Betty and Lee, moved to the Greensboro, NC area, to be near their sons. In 1984 her husband for 42 years, Lee Thorne passed away and was buried in Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro. While living independently, Betty worked as Staff Librarian for the accounting firm of Arthur Anderson for fifteen years. For the past three years Betty lived at Countryside Village, in Stokesdale, NC where she enjoyed the friendship of the many residents there. Betty was being lovingly cared for in the home of her granddaughter during her final months in Moneta, Virginia. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Guilford Memorial Cemetery with Steven Pressley of First Baptist Church, officiating at the graveside service for family and friends. She leaves behind her three sons, Richard, Tom and Carl Thorne, and one granddaughter Lynlee and her husband Neil and two great grandchildren, Jack and Violet Wastie. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to The Chrismons Group, First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.
