Ella Reavie Foley Carter, 91, of Rocky Mount passed away Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the home of her daughter Mary Frances Potter in Bassett. She and her husband owned and operated the Corner Market and Clock Shop on Hatcher Street in Rocky Mount. She also enjoyed organic gardening and was a member of Riverview Primitive Baptist Church, Bassett. Mrs. Carter was born November 5, 1919, a daughter of the late Josiah James Abram and Mary Joyce Foley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Lauren Carter; sisters, Annie Foley, Emma Thacker and Lucy Wilson who preceded her in death by a few hours on the same day; brothers, George William, Henry, Daniel and Richard Foley. Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Abram Vanus Carter and George Isaac Boaz and Mary Carter; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Dickie Potter, Alice Ann and Barry Townsend and Elizabeth Rebecca Carter; grandchildren, Sidney and Samantha Carter, Barry Williams, Lisa Fife, Steven Rhett Chitwood, Reavie Katrina Amos and Christopher Bruce Chitwood; several step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mae and Clyde Martin and Doris and Bud Roach; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 22, 2010 from Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Carter Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends 6-8 pm Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
