Known to many as Granny, Ella Sue Wray Chitwood passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 26, 2017. She was the daughter of Posey and Annie Maude Wray. The family finds peace in knowing Sue is now with the Lord and enjoying a great family reunion with her beloved husband, Claude Herbert, family and friends. Granny was a great woman - always dedicated to her family who she dearly loved, and her work. She worked for many years at Pluma (Martinsville), Hanover Direct (Troutville), and Save-A-Stop (Salem), where in her words "she ran a tight ship". She loved working outdoors in her yard, keeping her flower beds looking good, and her many fur babies through the years, most recently, her pugs, Girlie and Buttons. If you knew Granny, you know that she loved picking on others, each one of them in her own special way, but she was quick to tell you how much she loved you too. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Claude Herbert Chitwood. Surviving are her son, Claude Owen Chitwood (Angie); grandson, Anthony Brandon Chitwood (Melia); three great-grandchildren, Reed, Sawyer, and Elsie Chitwood; two brothers, Wayne Wray (Sylvia), and Bill Wray (Diane); and three sisters Barbara Smith (late H.L. Smith), Kathy Hudson (Billy), and Kaye Hepinstall (David); along with many other special family members and friends. The family wishes to thank the staff at Franklin Health and Rehab Center for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Franklin County Humane Society. Memorial services will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday at Flora Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eddie Hawks officiating. Her family will receive friends beginning at 4:30 p.m. prior to the service and other times at the home of Barbara Smith, 545 Smith Ridge Lane, Glade Hill, Virginia 24092.
