Elwood Eldridge Ferguson, 83, of Rocky Mount went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Wednesday, January 14th, 2009.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Doris Brooks Ferguson, his three children, Brenda Ferguson Scott, Pamela Ferguson Jennings, Timmie Elwood Ferguson, and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Elliott Scott and Lance K. Ferguson, also his adopted son. Elwood has left three living sisters, Carrie Ferguson Powell, Frances Ferguson Plybon, and Garnett Ferguson Robertson. He is blessed to also have many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Father, Abie Mataw Ferguson, Mother, Belva Cooper Ferguson, Two Brothers, Abie Lee Ferguson and Douglas Cooper Ferguson, and one sister Blanche Ferguson Onks.
He was born in Union Hall, VA on June 5th, 1925. He was employed by DuPont for over 35 years. In his life, he was a loving husband to his wife for over 63 years, and an example of generosity to his children, grandchildren, and all those he knew. He served the Lord and others by working in the church, and by growing a garden large enough to share with everyone. Being able to share his faith, garden, and wonderful sense of humor with others brought him unspeakable joy. He was an inspiration to all who came in contact with him during his courageous battle through many ailments within the last three years. Even in his darkest hours, he was filled with grace; he was not concerned for himself, but for others. Just as the parable in the Holy Bible states that the first shall be last and the last shall be first, perhaps his willingness to be last is the reason that he was chosen to be the first in his immediate family to see Jesus.
