Flossie Essie Altice Doss, 92 of Rocky Mount, went on her last journey, May 12, 2016 to be with her heavenly Father. She was born in Rocky Mount, January 7, 1924. She was the daughter of the late Harvey Abraham Altice and Dora Etta Wray Altice. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Wray Doss, who passed away February 1990, her brothers and sisters which she was the eight of nine siblings, Frank Lovie Altice, Robert “Abe” Altice (Margaret), Harvey LeRoy Altice (Ruby), Thelma ( Dallas) Hodges, Gracie (Paul) Hunt, Evelyn (Carl) Thurman, Frances Altice, Doris (Russell) Pagans. Surviving are her son Cecil Wray (C.W.) Doss, Jr. (Terri), grandchildren, Jeremiah S. Doss, Jennie L. Moreno (Fred), Christopher (Chris) S. Doss (Ivy), three great grandchildren which she adored, Layla Faye Doss, Grayson Fredrick Moreno and Elina Ann (Ellie) Doss. Other survivors include brother-in-law, James Russell Pagans, sister-in-law, Ruby Altice, many nieces and nephews with special niece and friend, Louise Bowles. Essie graduated from Glade Hill High School and married at age 18 to Cecil in 1942. Essie and Cecil enjoyed entertaining and cooking with friends in their home over the years. Essie enjoyed dancing and mastered the Hawaii Hula while they lived in Hawaii during and after WWII. She worked for the Air Force while there and they returned to the states with the Navy shipping their car to San Diego from Honolulu. Essie formed various clubs and she loved plants and flowers and was an accomplished floral designer. Essie helped form a Girl Scout Troop at Redwood. She enjoyed traveling and was a tour guide for her own trips for many years. Essie was a member of Redwood United Methodist Church and as a young girl played the piano at the family’s Wray’s Chapel at Hodgesville. She loved her church and many friends the Lord blessed her with during her life. She was blessed with wonderful neighbors David and Mary Frances Allman. Essie said the Lord had blessed her with a long and wonderful life, she said she didn’t know why but the Lord kept her around for some reason a long time. Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Redwood United Methodist Church. Her family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Friday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
