Ethel Elizabeth Sloan Carter, age 88 of Collinsville went to her heavenly home Tuesday, Jan 7, 2014 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born June 4, 1925, in Ferrum, Va., the daughter of the late James Walter Sloan & Martha Willis Sloan. She is also predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Millard Gordon Carter; beloved daughter, Dorothy Faye Carter "Dot"; four brothers, Thomas, Jesse, Melvin, and Jim Edd Sloan; five sisters, Alma Sloan, Belva Adkins, Mildred Lockett, Esther Goodwin, & Willie Cooper. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Kennith Gordon Carter, Sr. and Erma Webb Carter of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Daphne Arseneault (David) of Virginia Beach, Va., Sherry Crawford (Tim) of Jacksonville, FL, Kennith Carter, Jr. (Carolyn) of Collinsville, Bryant Carter (Kristi) of Collinsville; seven great-grandchildren, Michelle Arseneault, Dustin Arseneault, Brandon Crawford, Dylan Crawford, Brittany Carter, Marshall Carter, and Lauren Carter; one great-great grandchild, John C. King, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews. Ethel was a lifelong member of Pigg River Primitive Baptist Church in Callaway, a wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her life to caring for others. She was a great cake baker, and loved to garden and can her own homegrown veggies. She spent years making quilts for every person in her family and many others as well. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 1 p.m. Saturday with Elder W.T. Conner and Elder Junior Conner officiating. Interment will follow in the Sloan Family Cemetery in Ferrum. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount and other times at the residence at 521 Belmont Street, Collinsville, VA.
