Euell Jennings Hamblett, age 82 of Rocky Mount passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was born in Franklin County on February 14, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hallie and Jennings Bryant Hamblett; brothers, Everette, Dempsey, and Clydell; sisters, Alice Preston and Delores Glisson. He is survived by his caring wife of 57 years, Olvis "Vene" Brumfield Hamblett; son, Dale Hamblett (Melissa) of Sontag; daughter, Tammy Shorter (Rick) of Boones Mill; grandchildren, Amy and Derek Shorter; sisters, Ellen H. Robertson of Rocky Mount, Geraldine H. Gilley (Terry) of Ridgeway, Nancy H. Meador of Richmond, Marcella H. Peters (Ray) of Ferrum; brothers, Alton Hamblett (Pat) of Union Hall, and Jay Hugh Hamblett (Sue) of Boones Mill. Euell served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He served as a member of the American Legion and Woodmen of the World. He was employed at Associated Transport and Layman Candy Company. He was a retired Teamster of Local 171. Euell was also an avid Bass Fisherman at Smith Mountain and Philpott Lakes. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Dr. Dunn and Amedisys Hospice who cared for Euell over the years. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be sent to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Angie Weddle, 2300 McNeil Mill Road, Rocky Mount, Va. 24151. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Liz Lazenby officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Flora Funeral Service & Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
