Evelyn Byrd Shelburne, age 85, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, September 21, 2007, at Franklin Healthcare Center. Ebbie, daughter of the late Cephas Gillespie Shelburne and Emma Divers Shelburne, was born on June 26, 1922, in Rocky Mount, Virginia. Ebbie attended Texas Christian University and graduated from Radford College. She worked as a legal secretary for lawyers in Richmond and in Rocky Mount. Her secretarial skills served attorneys Carter Lee, Nathan Hutchinson, Keister Greer, Ralph “Dusty” Rhodes, and Richard Sutherland. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her older brother, Douglas Divers Shelburne; her sister-in-law, Florence Warner Shelburne; her brother-in-law, Rev. G. William Beale; her niece, Katherine Divers Beale; her brother-in-law, Clyde H. Perdue, and a special aunt, Elizabeth Shelburne. Survivors include her sisters, Helen Shelburne Perdue and Elizabeth Shelburne Beale of Rocky Mount; her brother Charles Raymond Shelburne and his wife, Louise McGuire Shelburne, of Martinsville. She is also survived by “her children”, the numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews who adored their aunt Ebbie. Ebbie was dearly loved by her family and friends. There was always cheerful conversation and laughter in her presence. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Monday, September 24 at Rocky Mount Christian Church with Rev. Jody Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in High Street Cemetery.
