Frances Marie “Polly” (Worley) English, age 85 of Rocky Mount passed away peacefully on October 2, 2010. She was born July 30, 1925, to Harve and Blanche Worley and was a member of Rocky Mount Baptist Church. She graduated from Franklin County High School in 1942 and attended National Business College where she was a member of the Girl’s Choral Club and nominated as a candidate for “Miss NBC”. Polly loved to travel, sing, play the piano and arts and crafts. She coordinated numerous bus trips with White Star to Atlantic City, N.J., Cape Canaveral, Florida, Branson, MO, and more. She also enjoyed many trips with her family to Myrtle Beach, Ft. Myers, Paradise Island and England. Polly was elected Woman of the Year by the Bald Knob chapter of the American Business Women’s Association in 1986. She was a charter member and served as President, Vice President, Recording Secretary and Hospitality Chairperson. She was recognized for her achievements at the National Headquarters convention in Kansas City, MO. During her career she worked as secretary for the Roanoke Gas Company, Clerk-Typist A for the Franklin County Health Department, in personnel, payroll, and bookkeeping at the Angle Silk Mill, Inc. (now J.P. Stevens), Wolfe Medical Group, Helms Veneer Corporation, and Cooper Wood Products. She served as Secretary/Clerk in Continuing Education, Admission, and Institutional Research at Virginia Western Community College. While she was at Martin Processing, she was honored for naming the company newspaper “The Yip, Yap and Yarn”. She worked for the Commissioner of the Revenue and retired in 1981 from the Franklin County Treasurer’s office where she served as Deputy Treasurer and continued to work as a consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics. Polly sang in the choir and played for Story Creek, Furnace Creek and Rocky Mount Baptist Churches. She was guided by her faith and will always be remembered for her kind, caring and loving ways. Polly was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William Leroy English. She is survived by her son, Tommy English of Rocky Mount; daughters, Ella Sue Roche (John) of Prairie Village, KS; and Fran Kinneberg (Rob) of Richmond, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Boone of Rocky Mount; and brother “Buddy” Worley (Betty) of Rocky Mount; brother-in-law, Guy English (Blandine); grandchildren; Steve, Jennifer, Austin, Britny and Jonathan; five great-grandchildren; Will, Harmon, Gary, Lili and Micah. Special thanks to Sally and Barry Martin and their special staff who took such good care of our mom and to the Carilion Hospice of Franklin County staff, especially Danielle. A visitation with the family will be held at Flora Funeral Home Monday from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Rocky Mount Baptist Church Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
