Fred R. Buckner

AMHI Fred R. Buckner, US Navy (Ret.) went to his heavenly home on July 20, 2017.  He was born on October 6, 1937 in Gretna, VA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Byard and Buena Buckner; brothers, Jack, Kenneth and Benny Buckner; and one sister, Linda Mountcastle. Fred was a distinguished and decorated veteran who considered it an honor and privilege to serve his country with the United States Navy for 20 years.  He was a lifelong member of Hollins Road Baptist Church of Roanoke. He is survived by his wife of 38 years; Doris Buckner, children, Sheila McNeil (Donnie), Glenn Buckner, Randy Buckner, Debbie McDonald, Bobbie McNeil (John), Jackie Wagner (Jeff); He is also survived by two sisters, Veneta Leslie (Ralph), and Barbara Cundiff. Fred was loved by seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to John McNeil and Libbie Brown for the care given to their grandfather during his last days and also to Good Samaritan Hospice. Services will be held at Flora Funeral Chapel, 2:00 p.m Sunday July 23, 2017 with Pastor Roger Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park. Visitors may call on the family at Flora Funeral Home on Saturday from 6-8 p.m.  Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center Rocky Mount.
