Frederick Garst, age 74 of Boones Mill died Friday evening, August 16, 2013. He was the son of Arthur High and Elva Ferguson Garst, and was born on January 29, 1939, in Boones Mill, Virginia. He grew up on his family?s farm which later became known as Occanneechi Orchards. Fred graduated from Franklin County High School, attended the University of Virginia and was active in the apple business for many years. In the mid-eighties he became active in Rocky Top Wood Preservers, a business he and family members had founded in the mid seventies, where he remained until his retirement. In Fred?s middle years he discovered the joys of beach saltwater fishing and later his boats; "Osprey" took him to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream. He always fished out of Ocracoke, and through the years earned many citation certificates for fish and placed one year in the Big Rock Tournament out of Morehead, NC. Fred is survived by his wife, Serina; three children, Frederick Jr. and Joanna, Serina and Graham, Carey and Kari; eight grandchildren, Christin, Ashleigh, Frederick III, Riley, Cormac, Ambrose, Ella, Nathanael, Micah; and great-grandchild, Isla. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 21 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount, VA.
